On the hunt for a new job? Trying to put your finger on that “something” that makes all the difference and helps you thrive day to day?

When you start job hunting, a lot goes into choosing an employer. We think about salary, benefits, the commute, the option to work from home, what the role involves day to day… but what about finding a company that’s genuinely right for you? Here are a few tips for a smarter job search.

Choosing the right company means choosing one whose values line up with yours.
When you’re job hunting…

List your top priorities

  • Get clear on what really matters to you.
  • Know which trade-offs you’re willing to make.

Don’t fire off your résumé everywhere

Spraying your résumé around isn’t the goal. Zero in on a handful of companies and roles that genuinely interest you.

  •  Do your homework on your shortlist — check out their website and their LinkedIn page.
  • What does the company value? What’s its vision?
  • Apply only where your must-haves are met and the company’s vision and values line up with yours.
  • Keep track of where you’ve applied.

Show up prepared — and stay sharp!

The interview is your chance to size up the fit, too.

  • Reread the job posting beforehand.
  • Notice the setting and the welcome you get; it says a lot about the culture.
  • Jot down the questions you’re asked.
  • Be honest and open in your answers. It helps the recruiter see whether the company can deliver on what you’re after.
  • Offered a tour? Take it! You’ll get a feel for the workplace and your future colleagues.

Wait for the employer’s answer

Got a yes? Now you can make an informed decision.

  • Don’t accept on the spot — give it some thought.
  • Be honest with yourself.
  • Remember why you wanted to leave your current job, or a past one.
  • Don’t settle for a role, or a company, that isn’t the right fit.

The bottom line: choose a company whose values match yours. Pick a role that suits where you are in your career and that you’ll find fulfilling. Finding a workplace where you can thrive makes all the difference!
