Tips for reporting a claim
When the unexpected hits, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. To help you through it — and to speed up your claim — here are a few simple things to do as soon as a loss occurs.
Write down the facts and document the damage
Take detailed photos or videos of the damage as soon as you can. Note the time and circumstances of the event, and if anyone else is involved, gather their contact information.
Keep the damage from getting worse
Without making full repairs, and as long as it’s safe to do so, take the emergency steps needed to stop things from getting worse — shutting off the main water valve in a leak, for example. One caution: don’t throw out damaged items or make permanent repairs before getting the go-ahead from your insurer.
Act quickly and keep your documents handy
Don’t wait to report a loss. Whether you reach out to your insurer or to us, do it as soon as you can. To save time, have your policy number and a general description of the affected property ready ahead of time.
